‘Defending Pornography’ Author to Discuss Her Views : Topics the national ACLU president will touch on at Ventura Bookstore include free speech, feminism and the law.

The subject of Nadine Strossen’s talk concerning issues of censorship, feminism and the law as described in her book “Defending Pornography: Free Speech, Sex and the Fight for Women’s Rights” will undoubtedly anger and frighten some people who are troubled by our rapidly changing cultural and economic climate.

Strossen, the national president of the ACLU and a professor of constitutional law, says “We are in the midst of a full-fledged sex-panic in which all descriptions and depictions of human sexuality are under attack.” She will present her views and sign her book at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Ventura Bookstore, 522 E. Main St.

Longtime Ventura resident and former police officer Jerome (Jerry) Boyle will sign “Apache Sunrise,” the account of his experiences as a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War. The book signing is at 7 p.m. tonight in Barnes & Noble, 4360 E. Main St., Ventura. Boyle currently works as a private pilot for offshore drilling operations.

Abigail Padgett (“Turtle Baby”); Taffy Cannon (“Tangled Roots”) and Janice Steinberg (“Death of a Postmodernist”) will sign their books at noon Saturday in Mysteries to Die For, 2940 Thousand Oaks Blvd., Thousand Oaks. Camilla Crespi (“The Trouble with Going Home”) and Catherine Dain (“Bet Against the House”) will be at the bookstore at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The Arcade Poetry Series, in celebration of Black History Month, will present performance artist Gauvin and the Olivet Baptist Senior Choir at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at 34 N. Palm St., Ventura. Hosted by poet Jackson Wheeler, the monthly Arcade Series was founded in 1987 by George Keenan.

Author Pete Wygle will describe the techniques needed to write the personal experience story, and recall for members and guests of the Ventura County Writers Club the three terrible years he and his family spent in a Japanese prison camp in the Philippines. Wygle, a petroleum geologist, is the author of “Surviving a Japanese POW Camp,” published by Pathfinder Press. The event begins at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Ottavio’s Banquet Hall, 340 Mobil Ave., Camarillo. Call 482-5648.
