LAW ENFORCEMENT : Benefit Planned for Wounded Deputy

Share

Hors d’oeuvres and a live band are planned for a March 6 benefit in a San Dimas nightclub to raise money for a sheriff’s deputy who was shot last year while on the job.

Proceeds from the event will aid Sheriff’s Deputy Steven Belanger, 29, and his wife and infant daughter. Belanger, who has been with the department for seven years, was shot Dec. 10 while arresting two assault suspects in Rowland Heights.

A bullet lodged in Belanger’s head cannot be surgically removed, Sheriff’s Deputy Ella Cooks said. Doctors at Queen of the Valley Hospital, where Belanger remains in serious condition, could not predict to what extent he might recover, Cooks said.

Several community groups have raised about $25,000 thus far to aid Belanger. Hacienda Heights horse owner Mike Brown named a harness racehorse Belanger and has pledged to donate all the horse’s winnings in 1995 to the deputy, Cooks said.

The benefit, from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m., is sponsored by the Western Connection nightclub and employees of the Walnut/San Dimas sheriff’s station. Admission is $5. The club is at 657 W. Arrow Highway, San Dimas.

Contributions can also be made to Belanger via the Sheriff’s Relief Assn., Account 815, Walnut/San Dimas Sheriff’s Station, 122 N. San Dimas Ave., San Dimas, CA 91773.
