COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Cypress Beats Fresno on Late Error

Corey Dean-Yeager scored on a throwing error with two outs in the bottom of the 12th inning as Cypress defeated Fresno, 8-7, in a nonconference baseball game Wednesday at Cypress.

Freshman second baseman Jeff Pickler went three for five with two runs scored for the Chargers (9-1-1), who blew a 7-2 lead.

Cypress is the defending state champion; Fresno won the title in 1992.

In nonconference softball:

Fullerton 5, College of the Desert 0--Stephanie Mendoza pitched a no-hitter, striking out nine, for host Fullerton (3-2). After an error on a bunt in the first inning, Mendoza (2-1) retired the final 20 batters. Christy Hensel had two hits, two runs batted in and scored once and Mandy Mendoza had a hit and two runs scored for the Hornets.

Irvine Valley 1, L.A. Pierce 0--Vickie Sukiasian drove in the only run with a single in the bottom of the third. Denise Gallegos gave up three hits and picked up the victory for Irvine Valley (1-3).

In nonconference women’s tennis:

Grossmont 7, Golden West 2--Grossmont, ranked third in the state, easily handled No. 6 Golden West, winning four singles and all of its doubles matches. Michelle Turner beat Marcia Herron, 6-1, 6-0, and Heather Keller beat Kellie Gangwisch, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3, for the Rustlers (0-1).
