Pauley Out as Site for City Finals

The City Section said Thursday that talks with UCLA officials over the use of Pauley Pavilion have broken off and that Cal State Dominguez Hills now will serve as the site of the boys’ and girls’ basketball finals.

Barbara Fiege, the section commissioner, said that Pauley Pavilion was too expensive for the Los Angeles Unified School District’s budget.

“We have been in the red for the last two years with the basketball program,” Fiege said. “It’s time that we work in the black for a while.”

The dates and times of the finals also have been changed.

The 3-A Division games have been moved to Friday, March 3. The girls’ game will tip off at 6 p.m., the boys’ at 8.

Championship games for the 4-A Division will be played March 4, with the girls’ final at 6 p.m., the boys’ at 8.

Traditionally, City finals have been played under a daylong format at the Los Angeles Sports Arena.

However, increasing costs at the Sports Arena forced the district to look elsewhere. The fee to rent the Sports Arena would have been $45,000.

It has been estimated that the district can save as much as $30,000 by changing sites.

“We won’t know what the savings are until all bills have been paid,” Fiege said.

Golf

Ojai attorney Paul Blatz has been elected president of Saticoy Country Club in Somis.

Among those joining Blatz as officers are Bob Brooks of Ventura as vice president and Dick Norman of Oxnard as treasurer. Saticoy, which opened in 1921, has been ranked by Golf Digest as one of the nation’s 100 outstanding courses.

The Southern California division of the Salvation Army will stage its first golf fund-raiser March 13 at Lakeside Golf Club in Toluca Lake.

Participants will compete alongside members of the USC and UCLA women’s golf teams. A silent auction of sports memorabilia and an awards banquet will follow.

Proceeds will benefit needy children in Los Angeles. Tournament berths and corporate sponsorships are still available.

Basketball

The Buena High girls’ basketball team (20-2) is ranked third in the state in Cal-Hi Sports’ final regular-season poll. Newbury Park (24-1) is ranked sixth and Alemany (21-4) 17th.

Krista Stark of First Lutheran High has been named the Heritage League’s most valuable player. Stark, a senior, averaged 30 points a game for Falcons.

Baseball

Agoura Pony Baseball and the West Coast Baseball School are sponsoring a Presidents’ Day Baseball camp for youths 6-14, at Lupin Hills Elementary School.

The Channel Islands Mariners, a 14-and-under traveling baseball team, have qualified for the 1995 AAU championships to be held in Cocoa Beach, Fla. in August.

Softball

The Santa Clarita Sharks, a 12-and-under traveling softball team, will be holding tryouts at the Castaic Sports Complex on Feb. 19 and Feb. 26 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Richard Schwalm will be the instructor for “Fly Fishing the Surf” at Conejo Valley Adult School.

Soccer

Willie Leon, a starting midfielder on the Chatsworth boys’ soccer team, will be ineligible for the City Section playoffs, according to his coaches. Leon’s cumulative grade-point average has sunk below the level needed to remain eligible.

West Valley League champion Chatsworth (8-4-2) plays host to Hollywood (8-4-3) this afternoon.
