COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Titans Rally, Beat Fresno State in Baseball

Cal State Fullerton rallied for four runs in the eighth inning to take the lead and a 7-3 victory over Fresno State in a nonconference baseball game in front of 5,220 Sunday at Fresno.

C.J. Ankrum had a two-out, two-run triple to put Fullerton in front, 4-3. Ruben Hernandez followed with a two-run, pinch-hit home run for the Titans (10-2).

Brian Loyd hit a home run in the ninth to put Fullerton ahead, 7-3. Loyd, from El Dorado High, had four hits in the game. He was nine for 14 in the three-game series.

Ted Silva had 12 strikeouts and pitched a complete game for the victory. Silva (4-0) allowed 10 hits but shut out the Bulldogs over the final four innings. He has won all four of his starts this season.

In another nonconference baseball game:

Long Beach State 9, Tennessee 0--Jason Minici had three hits, including a double, drove in two runs and scored two more for Long Beach (4-6) at Blair Field.

Jeff Liefer had two hits, including a home run, and scored three runs, and Kirk Pierce and Keith Rivera drove in two runs each for Long Beach.

In Big West Conference women’s basketball:

Pacific 57, UC Irvine 55--Visiting UC Irvine (13-9, 10-5) missed two shots in the final four seconds. Pacific took a 57-55 lead on a basket by Connie Blaisure with 11 seconds left.

After a timeout, UC Irvine’s Cher Scanlon missed with four seconds left. Jinelle Williams got the rebound, but missed with one second left.

Allah-mi Basheer scored for UC Irvine and Sandy Hofe and Missy Ross each had 13 points for Pacific (15-10, 8-6).

Nevada 86, Cal State Fullerton 82--Koko Lahanas scored 25 points and had 14 rebounds for visiting Fullerton (10-12, 7-8). Shayla Bradshaw also scored 19 for the Titans.

Kristen Grebing scored 26 and Katrina Crenshaw added 21 for Nevada (7-15, 4-10).

UC Santa Barbara 80, Long Beach State 68--Melissa Gower scored a game-high 28 for visiting Long Beach State. She was 10 of 16 from the field and made eight of 18 free throws. Long Beach made 15 of 38 free throws in the game.
