PREPS

The Claremont girls’ soccer team continues its bid for a Southern Section championship today against Los Alamitos in a Division I quarterfinal game.

In boys’ competition earlier this week, San Marino defeated Sonora, 1-0, and La Puente defeated Calabasas, 1-0 in overtime, in Division IV.

Bosco Tech defeated Aquinas, 1-0, and Maranatha beat Flintridge Prep, 3-0, in Division V.

In girls’ competition, South Pasadena defeated Foothill, 1-0, in Division II. Diamond Bar defeated Palm Springs, 5-0, and Rowland beat Quartz Hill, 1-0, in Division III.

* Michael Kawamura of Rosemead, Mannix Khelaghatian of Bonita, Eddie Fukuma of Alhambra, Mario Arras of Baldwin Park, Dani Mouri of Glendora and Guy Horchasitas of Sierra Vista won individual Southern Section wrestling titles last weekend and qualified for this weekend’s Masters Meet.

Kawamura won the 121-pound title in Division I as Rosemead placed ninth. Khelaghatian won the 154-pound title and Fukuma the 173-pound championship in Division II.

Arras won the 173-pound title and Mouri the 191-pound championship in Division III. Horchasitas won the 114-pound title in Division IV.

Walnut placed sixth and Sierra Vista eighth in Division IV.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Mt. San Antonio College baseball team improved its record to 10-0 by winning the John Arrambide tournament last weekend, moving to within two of the school record for most consecutive victories to start a season.

The Mounties defeated San Bernardino Valley College, 7-6, to win the title.

Tony Campbell drove in the winning run in the ninth inning with a bases-loaded single. Danny Ornelas earned the complete-game victory.

COLLEGES

Nineteen men and 10 women from Azusa Pacific are participating in the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics indoor track and field championships this week in Lincoln, Neb.

The Azusa men’s team has not won a championship, but has been the runner-up seven of the last eight years.

Junior Fatima Yusuf and junior Michelle Campbell of Azusa Pacific are the defending national champions in the 400 meters and the 55-meter high hurdles, respectively.

Defending men’s champions include Hong Li in the triple jump and Rene Bustamante in the shotput.

* Claremont-Mudd-Scripps swept the men’s and women’s swimming championships last weekend at the Cerritos Aquatics Center.

Individual men’s winners who qualified for the NCAA Division III championships include Takeshi Kaneko of Claremont in the 200 medley, Bill White of Claremont (100 butterfly) and David Brende of Claremont (100 free).

No women earned automatic qualification, although Maggie Wang of Claremont will be considered for a berth based on her time of 1 minute 9.56 seconds in the 100 breaststroke.

* The Azusa Pacific men’s basketball team, ranked 19th in the NAIA, clinched at least a share of its third consecutive Golden State Athletic Conference championship with victories last week over Concordia and Biola.

Azusa Pacific entered the week 22-7 and 11-1 in the GSAC. The Cougars play their final regular-season game Saturday night against Cal Baptist.

Azusa Pacific’s Raymond Tutt entered the week ninth in NAIA in scoring with an average of 26.7 points a game. He went into Tuesday night’s game against Westmont ranked third on the school’s single-season scoring list with 767 points, and needed only 85 to eclipse the record of 832 set by Ric Reed in 1974.

Deric Daniels of Azusa Pacific is averaging 20.8 points and eight assists in his last 12 games.

* The final games of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule will be played tonight with conference titles possibly on the line.

The Pomona-Pitzer men’s team (17-6) entered the week atop the SCIAC standings with a record of 11-1. Cal Lutheran (16-7, 9-3) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (14-9, 9-3) were tied for second.

Claremont defeated Pomona-Pitzer in overtime, 88-87, on Monday. Pomona-Pitzer will play Cal Lutheran tonight.

Cal Lutheran’s women (22-1) entered the week 10-0 with Claremont (19-4, 8-2) in second place and La Verne (13-10, 7-3) in third.

* The Cal Poly Pomona men’s basketball team gave first-year Coach Tom Marshall his 200th career victory last week when the Broncos upset defending national champion Cal State Bakersfield, 70-69, in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game.

Tyrone Merriweather made two free throws with 11 seconds left to help Marshall improve his record to 200-113. Pomona, however, lost Saturday to Cal State Los Angeles and were eliminated from contention for a spot in the CCAA tournament.

Pomona (15-9, 3-7) concludes its season Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

* The Cal Poly Pomona women’s team concludes its season Saturday at home against Grand Canyon.

Freshman Jessica Eggleston is averaging 15.5 points a game for the Broncos, who entered the week 9-15 and 2-7 in the CCAA after losing to Cal State L.A. and defeating UC Riverside last week.

* The Azusa Pacific women’s basketball team had its seven-game winning streak snapped with a 68-59 defeat by Biola last weekend.

Christy Brock is averaging 18.5 points for the Cougars, who conclude the regular season Saturday against Cal Baptist and begin the GSAC tournament on Feb. 28.

* The Azusa Pacific baseball team entered the week 6-4-1 after losing twice to Chico State in the championship round of the Chico State tournament.

But Chico State was probably feeling the pain worse than Azusa Pacific.

Azusa Pacific pitchers hit 12 batters in a 17-6 loss. Chico State pitchers hit four Azusa hitters in the same game.

PREP OF THE WEEK

Tony Skogen, San Marino--Skogen, the Titans goalkeeper, made 11 saves in a 2-1 victory over fourth-seeded Santa Paula in the first round of the Southern Section Division IV playoffs.

Skogen also scored a goal on a penalty kick.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Bill White and David Brende, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps--White and Brende helped lead the Stags to the championship of the SCIAC with their performances at the conference finals.

White won the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly and was a member of the winning 400 medley relay, 200 medley relay and 400 free relay.

Brende won the 100, 200 and 500 freestyle and was a member of the winning 400 and 800 free relays.

MISCELLANY

The Pomona-based Puno de Oro boxing program, for youths ages 8 to 17, is accepting registration. The gym is located at 850 East Grand Ave. in Pomona. Information: (909) 629-5494.

CALENDAR

Registration has begun for men’s and co-ed softball leagues sponsored by the city of Rosemead.

Fees are $320 a team for a 10-game schedule.

Registration will also be open for a co-ed volleyball league. Cost is $125 a team for a 10-game schedule.

* The city of Covina is accepting registration for adult softball leagues. Competition will be open in men’s D, men’s C/D, co-ed D and women’s D divisions.

Play begins Monday. Cost is $465.

The city is also accepting registration for roller hockey and pee-wee and youth track programs.

The roller hockey program is for ages 6 to 15 and will consist of five practice sessions and nine games, plus playoffs for qualified teams. Play begins in April.

The pee-wee program is for ages 5 to 7 and the youth program is for ages 8 to 11. Youngsters will learn fundamentals of events and will participate in the Mt. SAC Invitational youth days and Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation meets.

* A golf tournament sponsored by the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce is scheduled for June 19 at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena.
