Simi Valley High’s baseball program is under investigation for a possible violation of Southern Section undue-influence rules, section Commissioner Dean Crowley said Friday.

Crowley said his office was provided this week with information alleging a violation involving the Simi Valley baseball team.

Crowley met Thursday with Simi Valley Principal Kathryn Scroggin and asked her to begin an investigation.

Crowley said he hopes to learn the results of Scroggin’s investigation within a week to 10 days. He would not comment on the possible penalties if the section determines a violation did occur.

Undue-influence rules are intended to prevent coaches or other school officials from influencing the school choices of athletes.

“I’m not going to discuss anything until my principal makes a decision,” Scyphers said Friday.

The investigation involves Mike Rainer, a sophomore pitcher, who transferred from Simi Valley to Royal in December. Rainer’s twin, Matt, transferred from Simi Valley to Royal last summer.

Royal baseball Coach Dan Maye said last week that Mike Rainer is seeking a waiver from the Southern Section to have immediate varsity eligibility at Royal.

A waiver is required for immediate eligibility when a player transfers without changing addresses.

Scyphers said Monday that Simi Valley would not grant the approval necessary for Rainer to earn such eligibility.

Mike Rainer could not be reached for comment Friday.
