Calvary Chapel, the defending State champion, leads the county in the Southern Section Masters wrestling meet, which begins at 9:30 a.m. today at Fountain Valley High.
The Eagles’ eight entrants will join 200 other wrestlers from the section trying to qualify for the State tournament in Stockton next Friday and Saturday.
Calvary Chapel is led by Tito Archuleta, Joe Calavitta, Josh Holiday, Ed Mosley, Mike Aguirre and Matt Van Hook. Each won his weight class in the section Division I finals last week.
More than 50 other county wrestlers will be competing. Among them are Casey Elliott of Laguna Hills, Jim Ambriz of Saddleback, Andrew Pena and Justin Meier of Irvine, Anthony Pham and Richard Meza of Loara, Alexei Yanuaria of Anaheim and Ismail Abdullah of El Dorado.
An eighth-place finish or better qualifies for the state meet.
