Two men were hospitalized after they were shot while driving on Brookhurst Street early Sunday, then crashed into a power pole in what police described as a gang-related homicide attempt.

The victims were Quoc Mao, 21, of Midway City and Man Tran, 19, of Huntington Beach.

They were driving south on Brookhurst shortly after midnight Saturday when shots were fired into their car from another as they approached 13th Street, Police Sgt. Paul Prince said.

The victims’ car struck a traffic sign, a power pole and a planter wall before coming to rest, Prince said.

The victims were treated at scene by Garden Grove paramedics, then transported to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where both were in the surgical intensive care unit. Mao’s condition was critical and Tran was stable, nursing supervisor Nancy Rhomberg said.

Police said it was not known how many people were in the car from which the shots were fired. The car, described as a red Acura Integra, sped away after the shooting.
