HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : El Camino Real Begins With Comeback

Two-time defending City Section 4-A Division baseball champion El Camino Real began its season in winning form Wednesday, coming from behind to defeat visiting Monroe, 3-2, in nine innings in the first round of the San Fernando tournament.

The Conquistadores rallied for a run to tie in the seventh and a run to win in the ninth.

In the seventh, Ray Leduc doubled to drive in pinch-runner Mike Flynn from first base. In the ninth, Byron Carnes doubled with two out to drive in Mike Conn from second.

Conn and Steve Nelson each had two hits.

Sophomore right-hander Shaun Fishman struck out eight in seven innings.

In other San Fernando tournament games:

Cleveland 7, Van Nuys 0--Jared Mills went two for four with two runs batted in and Mike Schultz had five strikeouts in earning the victory at Cleveland.

Granada Hills 7, Poly 1--Gerrod Penwarden went two for two and scored four runs at Granada Hills.

San Fernando 12, Grant 8--Daniel Rios went three for three--including a pair of triples--and drove in two runs to lead the Tigers at San Fernando.

Walter Rios hit a home run and drove in two runs.

South Gate 5, Birmingham 2--David Motarro, Steve Dominguez and Jose Silva all had run-scoring singles for South Gate in the top of the eighth at Birmingham.

Fernando Centeno had a two-run double for Birmingham in the first inning.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Canoga Park d. Sherman Oaks, 15-3, 15-5, 15-3--Senior Noel Cruz had 16 assists in his first season as setter to lift the Hunters to a nonleague victory at Canoga Park. Teammate Chris Monzon had two blocks and eight kills.

Kennedy d. Poly, 15-4, 15-4, 15-5--Mike Whitmore and David Song each had nine kills for the Golden Cougars in an opener at Poly. Sean Beattie added five service aces for Kennedy.

Fountain Valley d. Harvard Westlake, 13-15, 16-14, 11-15, 15-8, 15-11--Kurt Seckington paced the Barons (1-0) with 79 assists in a nonleague match at Fountain Valley. Teammate Ed Ratledge had 27 kills and five other starters each had at least 10 kills.

Ventura d. Camarillo, 15-3, 15-13, 15-9--James Rutherford and Mike Corella each had seven kills for the Scorpions in a season-opening losing effort at Ventura. Teammate Eric Huang had 20 assists.

SOFTBALL

Reseda 4, Banning 0--Brenda Lomeli hit a triple and drove in two runs for the Regents (1-0) in a nonleague opener at Banning. Rosie Yeatts had three strikeouts and two walks.
