Despite some unhappy adventures on the back nine, Davis Love III took over sole control of the lead Friday at the halfway point of the Doral-Ryder Open.

And Love promises to improve on his 10-under-par 134 total during the next two rounds over Doral’s Blue Monster course. “I feel like I haven’t scored well over the last two days,” he said after a second-round 69.

Love needs a victory in the next five weeks to achieve his announced goal of making it into the Masters.

Left-hander Russ Cochran snapped out of an 18-month slump with an eight-under-par 64 that lifted him into second place at 135.

Greg Norman had another 68 and led a group at 136 that included Jeff Sluman, Justin Leonard, former Doral winner Bill Glasson and Joe Ozaki of Japan.
