COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Texas’ Smart Shuts Down Titans, 2-1
The Cal State Fullerton baseball team couldn’t solve Texas’ starting pitcher J.D. Smart and lost, 2-1, to the Longhorns Friday at Disch-Falk Field in Austin, Tex.
Smart (6-1), who gave up 11 runs against the Titans last weekend at Fullerton, held them hitless for five innings and finished with a complete-game, two-hitter with seven strikeouts. An RBI-ground out by Joe Fraser broke up Smart’s shutout bid in the ninth.
Jack Jones’ single in the sixth and a D.C. Olsen double in the ninth were all the Titans (15-3), ranked No. 1 in two polls, could muster against Smart.
In nonconference baseball:
Fresno State 5, Long Beach State 1--Sophomore Brendhan Behn went the distance with eight strikeouts for Fresno State (12-5), ranked 19th by Baseball America.
