Cape Fear (NBC Sunday at 9 p.m.),...
Cape Fear (NBC Sunday at 9 p.m.), Martin Scorsese’s over-the-top remake of the more modest and more effective 1962 original, finds crazed ex-con Robert De Niro menacing Nick Nolte, the lawyer responsible for convicting him. With Jessica Lange and Juliette Lewis as Nolte’s wife and daughter.
With Bill Murray as a multiphobic schmo and Richard Dreyfuss as his shrink, the 1991 What About Bob? (ABC Sunday at 9 p.m.) should have been a classic comedy. It’s far from that, but there are some laughs in it anyway. Murray and Dreyfuss have a kind of weird oppositeness that great comedy teams thrive on.
Boyz N the Hood (KCBS Tuesday at 9 p.m.), John Singleton’s powerful 1991 landmark drama of survival in South Central L.A., balances the relationship of a strong father (Laurence Fishburne, superb) and his promising son (Cuba Gooding Jr.) and the terrible vulnerability of less fortunate friends to the pressures of the gangs.
A Hard Day’s Night (KCET Wednesday at 8 p.m., again Saturday at 11 p.m.) offers John, Paul, George and Ringo, their managers, their hysterical fans, and Paul’s grandfather (“a clean old man”) in their daily retinue. It captures a time when rock ‘n’ roll seemed like it could save your soul. This 1964 Richard Lester film is a great movie musical.
Kinjite: Forbidden Subjects (KTLA Thursday at 8 p.m.) finds Charles Bronson once again playing the super-cop, this time taking on a truly evil pimp (Juan Hernandez) who kidnaps the daughter of a Japanese businessman; some unexpected and provocative twists and turns result.
The 1983 10 to Midnight (KTLA Friday at 8 p.m.) is yet another suspenser with Bronson’s vigilante cop taking the law into his own hands when his daughter is endangered.
The 1980 Any Which Way You Can (ABC Saturday at 8 p.m.) brings back Clint Eastwood and his orangutan chum Clyde from “Every Which Way but Loose” for more fisticuffs, ape-foolery and romantic mischief. Eastwood offers one of his most likable characters in one of his lightest diversions.
