COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Golden West Rolls in Softball, 9-0

Laura Smith was two for four, with three runs batted in and two runs scored for Golden West, which beat Riverside, 9-0, Wednesday in an Orange Empire Conference softball game called after five innings because of the mercy rule.

Teammate Amy Smith was two for four and had one RBI and Dawn Stewart was two for three for Golden West (3-8, 1-2).

In other conference softball:

Cypress 18, Irvine Valley 1 (5, mercy rule)--Third baseman Jennifer Allchin was two for three with one RBI for Cypress. She also scored twice. Second baseman Amber Lockhart had three RBIs and scored once for Cypress (14-4, 3-1).

In conference men’s swimming:

Saddleback 180, Riverside 42--Saddleback took first place in every event in its first meet of the year. Breno Nogueira won the 50 free in 23.22 seconds, the 1,000 free (10:46.70) and swam on the winning 400 freestyle relay (3:31.56). Rudy Markham won both diving events with a score of 200.2 in the one meter and 168.45 in the three meter.

In conference women’s swimming:

Saddleback 137, Riverside 101--Maiko Shigeeda won the 50 butterfly in 29.83 and the 100 butterfly in 106.37 for Saddleback (1-0).

In conference men’s volleyball:

Irvine Valley 3, Mesa 0--Irvine Valley swept Mesa (1-4) in one hour five minutes. The last time Irvine Valley swept anyone was in the first conference match of the season, at Grossmont. Irvine Valley hit .470 as a team, and held Mesa to .187. Swing hitters Beau Bianchi and Neal Hewko led the Irvine Valley attack with 15 kills and 14 kills. Eric Phernambu had 40 assists, and John Habben had six blocks for Irvine Valley (2-3).

Orange Coast 3, Golden West 0--Jason Crone had 18 kills and Jesse Simon added 15 kills for host Orange Coast (6-2, 3-2), which won, 15-13, 15-9, 15-10.
