Despite another controversy, Mike Scyphers’ position as Simi Valley High baseball coach appears secure, although the Pioneer program may be sanctioned by the Southern Section for alleged undue-influence violations.

Simi Valley Principal Kathryn Scroggin concluded her investigation of the allegations Thursday and submitted a letter with her findings to Southern Section Commissioner Dean Crowley.

“It’s just been resolved and no further action will be taken,” said Assistant Supt. Leon Mattingley, speaking on behalf of Scroggin. “(Scyphers) will be the coach over there this year.”

The status of the program will be decided by Crowley once he receives Scroggin’s report. He could place the Simi Valley program on probation or ban it from the playoffs, but courts have ruled the section has no jurisdiction over individuals, meaning Scyphers’ job is safe.

“I’m pleased with the outcome,” Scyphers said. “I’ve accepted whatever discipline has been handed to me and I’m pleased that I’m still the coach.”

Neither Scyphers nor Scroggin would reveal specifics about the discipline.

For Scyphers, in his 17th season at Simi Valley, his mere survival as coach can be seen as another victory in a turbulent year. He was suspended last May amid allegations of financial and disciplinary improprieties, but he was cleared of wrongdoing and reinstated in July.

New allegations of undue-influence violations arose last month when Ray Rainer accused Scyphers of influencing his son Mike, a sophomore pitcher, to enroll at Simi Valley.
