Holden’s Campaign

Share

The Times published an article (March 8) concerning my fund-raising for the council race in 10th District and my opponent, Stan Sanders. The headlines and the primary information in the article are incorrect. (I’m even referred to as “67 years old” when I’m actually 65. It may not seem like much, but those extra two years are important to me.)

The article reports amounts that are described as totals when they are actually subtotals. The sums quoted deal only with the first two months of 1995 and do not take into account total sums raised for this campaign. The actual total figures are: Holden, $210,443; Sanders, $120,772. The actual proportion of nearly two-to-one is in my favor and is the reverse of what is stated in your article!

The article also points out that I violated “a cardinal rule for incumbents--’Thou Shalt Ignore Your Rival’ ” when Sanders confronted me at a news conference outside my office. Sanders chose my office to make derogatory comments about me. He wouldn’t have the conference at his own office or on the City Hall steps. He blocked the door of my office as I was preparing to leave for the council session. I refuse to ignore lies and deceit right under my nose. I make no apologies for responding to this Rhodes scholar. I gave him what he deserved.

Our fund-raising is high and proper. It is Sanders who is wallowing in muddy waters. After all, it is Stan Sanders’ campaign finance tactics that are currently being investigated by the State Fair Political Practices Commission for misuse of public funds.
