MALIBU : Workers Clear Slides, Open PCH to Through Traffic

Share

Pacific Coast Highway is open to through traffic in Malibu after state transportation workers successfully cleared mammoth mudslides from Friday’s storm.

A Caltrans spokesman had said Sunday that the roadway would not be open until Wednesday. But workers scooped away a 25-foot-tall mountain of dirt at Pena Canyon and smaller slides at Tuna Canyon, Big Rock Drive and Las Flores Canyon Road by 5 a.m. Monday.

“We worked hard,” said Rick Holland, a Caltrans spokesman. “We had three separate contractors out there doing the work and we hired about 15 skip loaders to move the dirt. We still have a lot of catch basins and drains to clear and general cleanup to do.”

Topanga Canyon Boulevard, Malibu Canyon Road and Kanan Road are also open. Latigo, Tuna and Encinal canyon roads are still closed. Las Flores Canyon Road is open to residents only.
