BUENA PARK : Repaving Again Closes Portion of Beach Blvd.

Barely a month has passed since public works employees reopened a stretch of northern Beach Boulevard that was damaged in January storms, but drivers should not get too comfortable on their commutes yet.

On Sunday, the state Department of Transportation put the cones back up on Beach from the Artesia Freeway to Stage Road, just north of the Santa Ana Freeway, for a repaving project.

“Just when you thought it was safe to go out on Beach Boulevard, the state comes through with another project,” Public Works Director Donald K. Jensen told the City Council last week.

Businesses and motorists were cut off from use of Beach when the January rains caused part of the Fullerton Creek flood-control channel to collapse and overflow. A huge sinkhole formed and the road was shut from Orangethorpe Avenue to Manchester Boulevard. It reopened to much fanfare Feb. 9.

For four to six weeks, workers will be ripping up and pouring new asphalt, starting between 8 and 10 p.m. and working until 6 a.m., Jensen said. One lane will be open in each direction at all times.

It could have been worse, Jensen added. Originally, Caltrans had planned to do the work during daytime hours, and they would have been at it for about three months.
