COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Tellez, Fullerton Hand Cypress Its First Conference Loss in Baseball

Andy Tellez had two doubles and a home run and drove in all five runs as Fullerton beat Cypress, 5-4, in an Orange Empire Conference baseball game Tuesday at Fullerton.

Tellez drove in two runs in the first and fifth innings with doubles and hit his eighth home run in the third. The homer went about 420 feet, according to a Fullerton spokesman.

It was the first conference loss for Cypress (19-3-1, 6-1), which beat Fullerton, 19-3, in the conference opener. Fullerton (18-5, 3-4) was without five starters, including Tellez in that loss. The players were serving a three-game suspension for fighting.

In other conference games:

Rancho Santiago 11, Riverside 6--Toby Sanchez had two doubles, a triple and a single for host Rancho Santiago (15-6, 3-4), which snapped out of its recent slump. Rancho Santiago scored three runs in 30 innings and lost three games last week.

Golden West 7, Saddleback 6--Johnny Matlock walked with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and the bases loaded to force in the winning run for Golden West (9-13, 3-4), which trailed, 5-1, entering the bottom of the seventh.

In Orange Empire Conference women’s tennis:

Fullerton 9, Saddleback 0--Heather Campbell of Fullerton defeated Jeri Martel in singles, 6-1, 6-0. In doubles, Campbell and Debbie Vonusa defeated Vicki Peterson and Jeri Martel, 6-1, 6-1. Saddleback is 2-6, 2-4.
