PREP VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP : Huntington Beach Sweeps El Toro

Huntington Beach posted a convincing 15-10, 18-16, 15-10 victory over El Toro in a nonleague boys’ volleyball match Wednesday at Huntington Beach High, but both coaches kept the county top-10 matchup in perspective.
Huntington Beach, ranked No. 1 in Orange County, is the two-time defending Southern Section Division I champion. Although fifth-ranked El Toro couldn’t match the Oilers on this night, both coaches discounted the present for the future.
“I’m not real disappointed,” El Toro Coach Mike Jagd said. “We missed 23 serves, and I figure if you have three service errors in a game, you should lose that one. So we had more than our quota. But Huntington Beach did a nice job tonight. Their defense was the difference.”
Jody Cook-Fisher had 10 kills and Jeremy Bart, who has signed with Stanford, added 10 kills and a team-high 11 digs for Huntington Beach (4-0).
Sophomore setter Dennis Masuda came off the bench to give Huntington Beach a lift in Game 2 when it trailed, 9-4.
Masuda, who had 24 assists, helped Huntington Beach score nine consecutive points to take a 13-11 lead before two El Toro net violations and a hitting error gave the Oilers the game, 18-16.
In Game 3, El Toro led, 9-4, but the Oilers scored 10 consecutive points before winning the final game, 15-10.
The teams last met in the 1994 Division I semifinals. Huntington Beach defeated El Toro in a grueling, three-hour match, 11-15, 15-7, 8-15, 15-11, 18-16. Although this match was not as competitive, Oiler Coach Rocky Ciarelli said people shouldn’t be fooled.
“El Toro’s guys just don’t have a lot of game experience,” Ciarelli said. “Some of our guys do, so that makes a difference, seeing as we’re only in the third week of the season.
“You watch. El Toro and Newport Harbor are two teams that will be good.”
El Toro (2-3) showed flashes of brilliance throughout the match.
Middle blockers Sean Callahan, who had 14 kills and six blocks, and Matt Mauney, who had 13 kills, made the most noise. Outside hitters Steve Hilbert and Zack Humphrey chipped in with 11 kills each and setter Steve Nelson had 50 assists.
“The big parts of our game are there, ready to go,” Jagd said. “We can hit, we can block . . . But these guys are so big and strong, sometimes they just rely on that.
“They haven’t developed that attitude of digging every ball and playing tough defense. But they can learn that. I think we’ll get there.”
Jagd knows his team will be tested early. El Toro has lost to second-ranked San Clemente and fourth-ranked Fountain Valley, and the tough schedule includes the Orange County Championships and matches against third-ranked Laguna Beach and San Diego Section power Poway next week.
But Jagd hopes the schedule will help the team prepare for a tough Sea View League schedule and the playoffs.
Said Jagd: “Down the road, this team could be very good.”
