OAKLAND, Calif. — Stephanie Shadwell’s buzzer-beating half-court three-pointer gave El Cajon Christian a dramatic 49-47 victory over Ripon Christian in the girls’ Division V state championship game Friday.
Shadwell’s shot, released just before the horn sounded, came three seconds after Lisa Roos had given Ripon a 47-46 lead by making two pressure-packed free throws.
El Cajon Christian (33-3) avenged a 60-46 defeat by Ripon Christian (35-4) in last year’s championship game.
This was the fifth consecutive appearance for El Cajon Christian in the state finals, and the Patriots won their only previous title in 1992.
Shadwell led El Cajon Christian with 18 points. Jenny Wenning had 15. Alisha Nater, daughter of former NBA player Sven Nater, had 12.
“Everyone dreams of making a last-second shot to win the state championship. It’s an indescribable feeling,” said Shadwell.
