SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Soccer fans watched some of the county’s finest high school girls’ soccer players as the South defeated the North, 3-2, in the Orange County Soccer Coaches Assn. all-star game Wednesday night at Chapman University.

The South, coached by Santa Margarita’s Chuck Morales, rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit, scoring three goals.

Ocean View’s Kim Engesser, who scored two goals and was the game’s most valuable player, scored the game-winner with 19 minutes 27 seconds remaining. Engesser got the ball in front of the net and goalkeeper Marie Dillon of El Modena met her at 20 yards out. Engesser faked a shot and weaved around Dillon and dribbled the ball into the goal.

In the first half, Engesser pounded Marina goalkeeper Jennifer Simmons with six shots, but Simmons played an impressive half, recording four saves for the North.

Cassie Campbell, one of five Marina players represented on the North team, scored the first goal of the game with just less than 37 minutes left in the half. Jessica Stahlin of Dana Hills sent a pass down field and Campbell picked it up about 30 yards in front of the goal. She shot into the corner of the net out of the reach of goalkeeper Amy Nesbitt of Santa Margarita.

The South tied the score, 1-1, two minutes into the second half when Santa Margarita’s Erica DeVitas got the ball in a crowd of defenders and got off a shot that sailed over Dillon’s head.

Two minutes later, DeVitas got involved again as her crossing pass went directly in front of the net to Engesser, who headed it into the net for a 2-1 South lead.

The North, coached by Canyon’s Matt Kinney, knotted the score at 2-2, with 37 minutes remaining. Canyon’s Katie Erdei got the ball on the fly and broke away to go one-on-one with South goalkeeper Ali Haveluik of Corona del Mar. Erdei raced toward the front of the goal and looped a shot over Haveluik’s head into the net.
