HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Gold Strikes for Granada Hills in 8-4 Victory Over Chatsworth

Jarrett Gold’s two-run double with two out in the sixth inning broke a tie and Granada Hills went on to an 8-4 victory over Chatsworth in a Northwest Valley Conference baseball game Tuesday.

The Highlanders (5-3, 2-2) scored two more runs in the sixth to ensure the victory. Gold had two hits and drove in four runs for Granada Hills.

Jessie Carranza (2-0) pitched his first complete game of the season, striking out 10 and allowing nine hits.

Tony Ardito and Fred Farzaneh had three hits each for Chatsworth (5-2, 3-1), previously The Times’ top-ranked team.

Grant 9, Reseda 3--Scott Ward (1-0) scattered nine hits and two walks for the Lancers (4-4, 3-1) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference victory at Reseda.

Walter Rios was three for three for the Lancers, after a four-for-four performance Monday, and Matt Rutter doubled and homered for the Regents (1-3, 1-3).

Sylmar 9, Van Nuys 1--Steve Zamora’s bases-loaded triple highlighted a five-run sixth for the Spartans in a Valley Pac-8 game.

Alex Ortiz opened the scoring for Sylmar (5-2, 3-1) with a solo home run in the third. Hiram Damwijk added two doubles.

Junior right-hander Rafael Velazco (3-0) struck out eight in six innings.

Kennedy 10, El Camino Real 3--Terrmel Sledge had three hits--including a double--and drove in two runs for the Golden Cougars (6-2, 3-1) in a Northwest Valley Conference victory.

David Soto added two hits and two RBIs for Kennedy.

San Fernando 10, Taft 8--The Tigers jumped to a 9-1 lead after three innings and held on for a Northwest Valley Conference victory at San Fernando.

Javier Navarro hit two triples and drove in two runs, and Alex Esqueda added two RBIs for the Tigers (4-5, 1-3).

Greg Venger and Ryan Long each had two hits for Taft (2-2).

Littlerock 11, Mojave 9--Robbie Spradlin had two hits, drove in three runs and scored twice for the Lobos in a nonleague victory.

Robert Roberts added two hits, two runs and two RBIs for Littlerock (4-7).

Aaron Green added two hits and scored three runs for the Lobos.

Birmingham 6, Cleveland 2--Jimmy Uline had two hits, including a two-run home run, and Sacundo Barrera added two hits and two RBIs for the Braves (5-4, 2-2) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Birmingham.

Pedro Rodriguez, who had two hits, threw one pitch in the seventh inning and induced a game-ending double play to notch his third save.

Junior Brignac had two hits for the Cavaliers (2-5, 1-3).

L.A. Baptist 32, Western Christian 3--Bryan Gant had three doubles and four RBIs for the Knights (7-1, 1-0) in an Alpha League blowout.

John Wada had three hits and four RBIs, while John Wilson doubled twice and singled once to drive in three runs for L.A. Baptist.

Hoover 3, Glendale 1--Eddie Perez hit a solo home run in the fourth inning and Steve Staub added a two-run triple in the fifth for the Tornadoes (3-5, 2-2) in a Pacific League game at Hoover.

Palmdale 13, Desert 1--Ben Mia scored three runs and threw three hitless innings for the Falcons (7-3) in a nonleague game.

Shad Martin had three hits, including a triple for Palmdale.

Highland 3, Paraclete 2--The Bulldogs (4-5) scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Robert Reeves in the bottom of the sixth for a nonleague victory.

Poly 18, Canoga Park 2--Steve Guerrero hit a grand slam and drove in six runs for the Parrots in Valley Pac-8 Conference victory at Lanark Park.

Chris Hernandez went two for three and tripled for Poly (5-3, 4-0).

Hart 4, Saugus 2--Eric Horvat had two hits, including a double, and scored two runs for the Indians (3-6, 2-0) in a Foothill League victory at Hart.

Luis Sanchez allowed two hits in 2 2/3 innings of relief, striking out five, to pick up the victory.

Santa Barbara 10, Buena 3--The Bulldogs (4-5, 1-3) made seven errors and gave up eight unearned runs in a Channel League game at Santa Barbara.

The game was called because of darkness after six innings. The Bulldogs have made 14 errors in their last two games.

David Arroyo had two of Buena’s four hits.

Oak Park 2, Carpinteria 0--Cameron Macarelli and Brent Scheider combined on a one-hitter for the Eagles (4-1, 4-0) in a Tri-Valley League game.

Macarelli (3-0) didn’t allow a hit until the fifth inning. Tyler Blondi scored for Oak Park after a first-inning double.

Arcadia 4, Crescenta Valley 1--Gary Godbold doubled home the Falcons’ run in a Pacific League game at Arcadia.

St. Francis 8, Bosco Tech 2--Jim Henning had a double and three RBIs for the Golden Knights (4-5) in a nonleague game at Bosco Tech.

Steve Marotta, Ray Corrales and Mike Velasquez each added two hits for St. Francis.

Moorpark 13, Malibu 2--Shortstop Travis Ehrlich had three hits and three RBIs for the Musketeers (5-5, 3-1) in a Frontier League game at Moorpark.

Justin Ames (3-1) added three hits and allowed one run over three innings for Moorpark, and freshman David Gray had two hits and drove in two runs.

Village Christian 9, Kilpatrick 0--David Swanson (3-0) pitched a three-hit shutout and struck out five for the Crusaders (8-0, 1-0) in an Alpha League opener at Tujunga Park.

Mike Wertz, Adam Davis and Mike Santiago each added two hits for the Crusaders.

Calabasas 3, Nordhoff 1--Jared Sandler (3-0) scattered five hits for the Coyotes (6-0, 3-0) in a Frontier League victory at Nordhoff.

Darin Reisman went two for four and drove in a run for Calabasas.

Mike Walsh (2-2) struck out seven and walked nine for the Rangers (4-6, 1-3).

Monroe 14, North Hollywood 2--David Lusk doubled, had three RBIs and reached base in all five of his trips to the plate as the the Vikings (2-7, 2-2) downed the Huskies in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at North Hollywood.

Merrill Dunn tripled for the Huskies (1-9, 1-3).

Bell-Jeff 12, Cathedral 8--Richard Szeptycki contained the Phantoms (1-1) in the sixth to wrap up a Santa Fe League victory for the Guards (5-4, 2-1) at Bell-Jeff.

Szeptycki escaped a bases-loaded jam in the sixth by allowing only one run, and struck out the side in the seventh.

The Guards had six runs in the bottom of the sixth. Josh Milon went three for four, scored twice and stole three bases.

Montclair Prep 16, Cantwell Sacred Heart 9--Andrew Miller had three hits, including a home run, and three RBIs for the Mounties (5-3) in a nonleague victory.

Mike Wellen also had three hits and three RBIs for Montclair Prep.

San Marcos 8, Hueneme 2--The Vikings (8-4, 2-3) gave up eight unearned runs, enabling the Royals (7-1, 3-1) to grab a Channel League victory at San Marcos.

Brian Donohue doubled twice for the Vikings.

Quartz Hill 14, Workman 2--J.D. Smith doubled twice, hit a solo home run and had five RBIs for the Rebels (7-0) in a nonleague game at Workman.

Darrell Hussman (3-0) pitched a three-hitter and struck out 12.

Quartz Hill’s Kyle Goss went three for four.

Burbank 5, Canyon 3--Jeff Atkinson’s two-out triple in the seventh drove in the go-ahead run for the Bulldogs (4-5-1, 1-1) in a Foothill League victory.

Jason Jonas followed with a run-scoring single to give Burbank an insurance run.

Canyon’s Mike Bench and Jason Willis had run-scoring single in a three-run fourth inning that tied the score, 3-3.
