Roger Amos Dewitt; Farmed at Newhall Ranch

Roger Amos Dewitt, a longtime Ventura County farmer, died Thursday at his Santa Paula home after a lengthy illness. He was 84.

“He was an everyday kind of guy,” said Thomas Dewitt, his youngest son. “He had good common sense. He was a farmer all of his life.”

His son said that Dewitt worked at the Newhall Ranch for 22 years before his retirement, farming mostly citrus and avocado.

Dewitt was born in Arkansas and moved to Ventura County 58 years ago. He liked to fish and was a loyal Los Angeles Dodgers fan.

He is also survived by his wife, Reba Dewitt of Santa Paula; another son, James Dewitt of Mesquite, Tex.; two brothers, Bob Dewitt of Cecil, Ark., and Maurice Dewitt of Panama City, Fla.; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Santa Paula Cemetery.

Skillin-Carroll Mortuary in Santa Paula is handling the funeral arrangements.
