Richard E. (Ric) Cardenas, who owned a small beer and wine store in Oxnard’s La Colonia neighborhood, died this week after a lengthy illness. He was 46.

He owned Ric’s Colonia Mart for about three years before problems with crime in the neighborhood drove him out of business, said his wife, Diane Lee Cardenas.

Before then, he worked for his grandfather at Colonia Liquors.

“He just liked the interaction with people,” his wife said.

Cardenas grew up in Oxnard and played football at Santa Clara High School.

In addition to his wife, he leaves his sons, Richard Ray Cardenas and Michael E. Cardenas; his mother, Clara H. Duran, and his father, Richard Noel Cardenas, all of Oxnard.
