The Clippers already have been eliminated from the NBA playoffs and they’d like to make sure the Sacramento Kings don’t make it either.

The Clippers put a dent in the Kings’ playoff hopes with a wild, 112-105 overtime victory Saturday night before a sellout crowd of 17,317 fans at the Arco Arena.

The Kings (35-39) trail the Denver Nuggets (35-38) by half a game in the race for the eighth and final Western Conference playoff berth. The Kings have eight games left, including one against the Clippers on Tuesday at the Sports Arena.

Clipper forward Tony Massenburg had a career-high 26 points and rookie forward Lamond Murray scored 19 points as the Clippers (16-59) ended a 16-game road losing streak. The NBA’s worst team, the Clippers have lost 33 of 37 road games.

Guard Pooh Richardson had 18 points and seven assists.

Bill Fitch, who has coached more NBA games than anyone else, simply shook his head after watching his team squander a 13-point lead in the final 1:58.

With the Clippers leading by 97-96, King center Olden Polynice, a former Clipper, had a chance to give the Kings the lead, but he missed two free throws with 4.8 seconds remaining.

“We never should have lost that game,” Polynice said. “I had a chance to put it away and I blew it. I’ve got to take a lot of the blame for that.”

The Clippers looked if as they had the game won after Richardson made two free throws with 1.2 seconds left to for a 99-96 lead.

But these are the Clippers.

Massenburg fouled guard Doug Lee as he was attempting a three-point shot on the inbounds play with 0.1 seconds remaining. The Clippers, who were walking off the court, couldn’t believe the call. From television replays it appeared that Lee had jumped into Massenburg as he launched a desperation shot.

“We got some home cooking on the calls,” Massenburg said of the officiating. “I switched off on (Lee). All I wanted to do was put my hands up. But one of my teammates or one of the Kings pushed me into him. I didn’t think it was enough contact to have it called.

“It was terrible. I can talk about the officials all night long, but I won’t.”

Lee made two free throws before Fitch called a 20-second time out to try to throw off his rhythm. Fitch called a regular timeout immediately afterward, but Lee calmly made the third free throw to force a five-minute overtime.

Guard Mitch Richmond, who scored a season-high 44 points, three points shy of his career-best, had 18 points in the final quarter as the Kings outscored the Clippers 14-4 down the stretch.

Clipper Notes

Forward Loy Vaught missed his first game of the season with a hyperextended right elbow. Vaught was injured when San Antonio Spurs center David Robinson blocked his dunk attempt in the first quarter of last Tuesday’s 113-89 loss to the Spurs. “It’s very frustrating because I like to be known as a player who’s like an ironman type of player who’s going to show up every night,” Vaught said. “I wanted to play all 82 games.” Vaught is experiencing numbness in his right arm.
