The San Francisco Giants reached agreement with Glenallen Hill and said he would bat fifth, backing up Barry Bonds and Matt Williams in their order.

Hill, who hit .297 with 10 homers, 38 RBIs and 19 stolen bases last season with the Chicago Cubs, will earn a $500,000 base salary plus incentives that could total $300,000.

More than a thousand angry fans in Kansas City have called radio shows and newspapers to say Royal officials have gone too far--trading pitcher David Cone and others--to keep costs down.

Unpopular trades, on the heels of the eight-month strike, have spawned a movement to boycott the home opener on April 26, despite a plea by the front office for understanding.

Mike Herman, the team’s president, defended the trades, calling them “investments for the future. This is not about a one- or two-year fix.”

The Colorado Rockies signed their second pitcher in as many days, right-hander Omar Olivares, who was 3-4 with a 5.74 earned-run average last season with the St. Louis Cardinals. Colorado signed Bill Swift Saturday. . . . Right-handed pitcher Jaime Navarro and the Cubs agreed to an $850,000, one-year contract that gives him the chance to earn $650,000 more in performance bonuses.
