BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : Hershiser Goes Two in Debut
After 12 years with the Dodgers, Orel Hershiser took the mound in a Cleveland uniform for the first time and looked sharp for his two innings in the Indians’ 7-3 exhibition loss to the Kansas City Royals in Haines City, Fla.
Hershiser, 36, signed a one-year, $1.45-million contract with the Indians on April 8. The deal includes a $1.5-million club option for 1996.
In two innings, he gave up three singles--two of them on high choppers to third--and one unearned run.
“Same thing in an Indians uniform as a Dodgers uniform,” Hershiser said. “It’s still 60 feet, 6 inches to the plate, still 90 feet to first. Still playing with a bunch of great guys.”
Of the 11 batters Hershiser faced, only Jon Nunnally hit the ball to the outfield.

Jose Canseco lent his support to the locked-out major league umpires, joining their picket line before Boston’s exhibition game against Texas in Fort Myers, Fla. . . . John Smoltz, in his first appearance since July 31, pitched two scoreless innings and struck out two in a 2-1 victory over the Yankees at West Palm Beach, Fla. Smoltz had surgery Sept. 8 to remove a bone spur and chips from his right elbow.
