COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Cal State Fullerton Defeats Pacific

Cal State Fullerton won its eighth consecutive game and retained a three-game lead for first place in the Big West Conference, defeating University of the Pacific, 9-5, Saturday night at Titan Field.

The Titans (38-6, 12-2) trailed, 3-0, after one inning, but got single runs in the third and fifth before breaking the game open with six runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by Tony Miranda’s three-run homer (his seventh) and D.C. Olsen’s eighth home run.

Titan starter Tim Dixon (9-0) survived a tough first inning and pitched into the seventh to earn the victory. Mark Chavez relieved Dixon in the seventh inning to face the tying run at the plate and induced an inning-ending ground ball by pinch-hitter Dustin Johnson. Chavez finished the game to earn his third save of the season.

Olsen added a double and a single and had three runs batted in for the game.

In Big West Conference baseball:

Long Beach State 14, UC Santa Barbara 9--The 49ers came back from a 7-0 deficit with 14 runs in the final four innings. Jason Minici was three for five with a home run and four RBIs and Kirk Pierce was three for four with a home run and three RBIs for Long Beach State (22-19-1, 9-5).

In Big West Conference softball:

Long Beach State 1-7, UC Santa Barbara 0-2--Amy Miner pitched 5 1/3 perfect innings before giving up a hit in the sixth inning of the first game and finished with a two-hit shutout.

In the second game, Adams’ three-run homer in the sixth inning put the game out of reach for Long Beach State (27-24). Miner pitched the final two innings to earn her first save of the season.

Utah State 4-5, Cal State Fullerton 3-7--Shannon Dolan and Traci Fischer hit consecutive doubles to highlight a five-run fourth inning for Cal State Fullerton in the second game.

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Point Loma Nazarene 5-2, Concordia 3-4--Concordia jumped to a 4-0 lead in the second game and held on to split the doubleheader.

Southern California College 3-5, Azusa Pacific 4-4 (8, 8)--Carrie Nelson scored on a passed ball with two outs in the top of the eighth inning to lead Southern California College (33-16, 11-3) in the second game of a doubleheader. Nelson had reached base on a single.

In nonleague softball:

Chapman 2-5, Loyola Marymount 1-1--Chapman got strong pitching in both games to sweep the doubleheader. Christy Guidorizzi pitched a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts in the first game, and Leslie Gerbin followed with a four-hitter in the victory in the second game.

Lisa Cansilla was six for eight with three RBIs in the doubleheader and scored the game-winning run in the first game for the Panthers.

At the U.S. Intercollegiate Golf tournament:

UC Irvine in 13th--UC Irvine, at 593, is tied with San Jose State and Fresno State for 13th place after the second round. Arizona and Tulsa lead the tournament at 572.

Kevin Yamauchi is in 40th place after shooting a five-over 76 at Stanford Golf Course. Yamauchi, at 148 after two rounds, is 13 strokes behind the tournament leader Eric Lohman of UCLA.
