HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Chatsworth Hits, but El Camino Real Wins

Chatsworth tagged El Camino Real ace pitcher Tami Jones for eight hits--including four for extra bases--but the Conquistadores defeated the Chancellors, 9-3, in a Northwest Valley Conference softball game Wednesday.

El Camino Real, the defending City Section 4-A Division champion, scored two unearned runs in the top of the first inning, but Chatsworth (9-3, 6-3 in conference play) countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning on two singles and two triples.

Ramona Shelburne hit a two-run home run in the fourth to give El Camino Real a 4-3 lead.

Chatsworth loaded the bases with none out in the fifth, but the next three Chancellor batters popped up, grounded into a force at home and bounced back to the pitcher.

Shelburne was two for four for El Camino Real (17-1, 9-0), which has won 17 consecutive games since losing a tiebreaker to Hoover in the opening round of the Hart tournament.

Sharleen Rubin had a double, a triple and two runs batted in for Chatsworth.

Cleveland 4, San Fernando 3--Tammy Wilhite singled in Millie Jefferson with the winning run in the eighth for the Cavaliers (4-9, 2-7) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Cleveland.

Oliva Miguel (4-7) threw a five-hitter and struck out six for the Cavaliers. San Fernando (7-10, 3-6) had a runner on third with two out in the top of the eighth, but could not score.

Granada Hills 2, Kennedy 0--Jessica Creith scattered seven hits and doubled in a run in the first inning for the Highlanders (12-5, 7-2) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Granada Hills.

Sandra Durazo threw a five-hitter and struck out 12 for Kennedy (16-3, 6-3).

Birmingham 9, Taft 4--The Toreadors gave up 13 walks and the Braves (5-8, 3-6) waltzed to the Northwest Valley Conference victory at Birmingham.

Kyle Brown had a double for Taft (0-9 in conference play) and drove in a run.

Verdugo Hills 16, Franklin 4--aryan May and Kelly Balkey each had three hits and three RBIs for the Dons (11-3, 8-0) in a Northern Conference game at Franklin.

Verdugo Hills starter Melanie Wood (9-2) went four innings, struck out four and allowed no runs and two hits. She was relieved by Shannon Schoonover in the fifth.

Montclair Prep 13, Ramona Convent 2--Laura Power (5-0) struck out four and Tamra Freedman hit her third home run of the season as the Mounties (13-2) beat Ramona Convent (8-3) in a nonleague game at Ramona Convent.

Louisville 10, Flintridge Sacred Heart 0--Freshman Stefanie Urman allowed two hits, struck out four and walked one for the Royals in a Mission League game at Louisville that was called after six innings because of the 10-run rule.

Urman also had two doubles and two RBIs for Louisville (6-7, 2-2).

L.A. Baptist 10, Western Christian 6--Eliza Voita hit a three-run home run in the fifth and Joy Bowman had a three-run triple in the second to power the Knights (4-9, 4-3) to an Alpha League upset at L.A. Baptist.

Western Christian fell to 13-3, 5-3 in league play.

BOYS’ TRACK

Nordhoff 91, Moorpark 37--Jeremy Lawson won three events for the Rangers in the Frontier League meet at Nordhoff.

Lawson timed 15.9 seconds in the 120-yard high hurdles and a school-record 40.2 in the 330 intermediates, breaking the previous mark of 40.8 set by Ty Jeffrey in 1985.

Lawson also spanned 19 feet 7 1/2 inches to win the long jump as Nordhoff (8-0, 4-0) clinched its fifth consecutive league title.

GIRLS’ TRACK

Nordhoff 92, Moorpark 42--Bridie and Rhiann Hatch combined for seven victories for the Rangers in the Frontier League meet at Nordhoff.

Bridie Hatch won the 440-yard dash in 60.3, the 100-meter highs in 16.3 and the 330-yard lows in 47.5.

Rhiann Hatch, who is not related to Bridie, won the 100 meters (13.4), 220 yards (31.2), long jump (14-8 1/2) and triple jump (29-7) as Nordhoff (7-1, 4-0) clinched its fourth consecutive league title.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Kennedy d. Birmingham, 15-6, 11-15, 15-8, 15-8--The Golden Cougars clinched a share of the Northwest Valley Conference title for the first time in school history with the victory at Birmingham.

Mike Whitmore had 13 kills and Miguel Estrate added 10 service aces for Kennedy (12-1, 9-1).

Sylmar d. Grant, 15-6, 15-11, 15-7--The Spartans (11-2, 8-2) beat the Lancers (8-5, 5-5) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match.

Sylmar’s Edward Terry had 11 kills and Matt Garcia had 22 assists. Grant’s Eddie Yoon had 35 assists.

Channel Islands d. Newbury Park, 15-2, 15-11, 15-6--Melanio Lopez had 10 kills and Riv Amores added five for the Raiders (11-2, 9-2) in a Marmonte League match at Channel Islands.

Canoga Park d. Monroe 15-13, 9-15, 15-6, 9-15, 15-8--Chris Monzon had 24 kills and Carloes Harper added 16 for the Hunters in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match.
