The Ojai Valley tennis tournament today will celebrate its 100th birthday.

But the question is, will an 84-game winning streak at Ojai by doubles team Bob and Mike Bryan of Camarillo grow to 100 and beyond?

It is a burning question that practically gives Wayne Bryan, father and coach of the twins, a case of heartburn. He wants it to end.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been so nervous at a tournament as last year, because they were trying to do that streak crap,” said Wayne Bryan, who has seen his sons survive nine game points and break serve 42 times during the streak. “And I’ve been to tournaments all over the world.”

Whether Wayne Bryan can stop worrying remains to be seen. The twins say the streak, which started after they lost the first game of their first match in the 16-and-under division two years ago, is not a concern.

After the Bryans finished second in the nation and No. 1 in Southern California in 16 doubles last year, they were selected to the U.S. Junior National team for 1995. A better doubles team is not likely to be found in Ojai.

The Bryans have won 14 consecutive sets by the score of 6-0. They figure to post a lot more of them, even though they’ve moved to the tougher 18-and-under division.

“We’ll be gunning for it,” Bob said. “I’m going to be thinking about it, but that’s not going to be our goal.”

What will be the goal? “We’re just going to have fun,” Mike said.

In a tournament that boasts the Pacific 10 Conference championships, has been known to attract former Grand Slam players and draws around 1,600 players in 34 divisions, the Bryans are noteworthy for the streak.

“They’ve been playing here for years and everybody knows them,” said Gerry Roe, a tournament official. “Having made the national team makes them big stars in the area.”

Playing for Rio Mesa High in the Boys’ Interscholastic Division, Mike and Bob will face Adrian Manalang and Wilfredo Nerida of Carson at 8 a.m. today in the first round. Assuming they win, the Bryans will play again at 2 p.m.

“It’s one of my best tournaments of the year,” Mike said. “Libbey Park (where the event is centered) is awesome. It’ll be a nice way to relax and not have so much pressure that we’ll face in Europe.”

On Monday, the Bryans will embark on a month-long tour of Italy, which will culminate in the playing of the Junior Italian Open. They will return to Camarillo for one month then spend three weeks in England preparing for the Junior Wimbledon tournament. Following Wimbledon are five national events in the United States.

Ojai has become a breath of fresh air for the Bryans. It represents one of few occasions that friends and relatives can see them play.

“It means a lot to play there,” Bob said. “It just has a lot of tradition. Since I was 4 years old, I’ve grown up watching it. And it was always a dream of mine to play in it.”

Dozens of college coaches in attendance will likely be interested in the streak.

Bob anticipates the twins receiving a few recruiting calls this weekend.

“You never know,” he said. “There’s is a slight chance of it.”
