PORT HUENEME : Man Is Held After Bashing Windows

Share

In an apparent rage over a domestic dispute, a Port Hueneme man wielding a baseball bat broke every window in his house before being arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, authorities said Monday.

In the scuffle to subdue the suspect, identified as Phillip Richard Pina III, officers used pepper spray and a baton, and a police sergeant’s wrist was broken, authorities said.

Officers had responded to a call shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday that a man in the 1700 block of Kern Street was demolishing his house with a bat, said Port Hueneme Police Sgt. Ken Dobbe.

Dobbe said that Pina began breaking windows after an argument with his wife. When Port Hueneme Police Officer Paul Gomez arrived and ordered him to drop the bat, Pina turned the bat toward Gomez and taunted the officer to shoot him, police said.

When Sgt. Ted Snyder arrived on the scene a few minutes later, Pina turned and advanced on him, Dobbe said. Snyder struck Pina with his baton and doused him with pepper spray, temporarily disabling him. However, a few moments later, Pina continued to resist arrest, police said. At some point during the continuing struggle, Snyder’s right wrist was broken.

Pina, who suffered minor injuries in the fight, was taken to St. John’s Regional Medical Center where he was treated and released to the custody of Ventura County Jail officers. Pina’s wife and his 12-year-old son were not injured during the incident.

Dobbe said Sgt. Snyder was also transported to St. John’s, where he was treated for the broken wrist and released. Officer Gomez was not injured.

Pina was in Ventura County Jail on Monday in lieu of $20,000 bail.
