Using more than 1,000 gallons of paint and about 500 rollers and brushes, volunteers will work all day Saturday to spruce up the homes of elderly and disabled residents during the fifth annual Paint Your Heart Out Anaheim event.

Working in groups of 15 to 20 people, the volunteers are expected to paint 36 homes throughout the city. The program is responsible for painting and rehabilitating 156 homes since its inception in 1991.

Paint Your Heart Out Anaheim is a program of the Anaheim Community Foundation and is sponsored in cooperation with the city’s Community Development Department.

The program originally began with Community Block Grant Funds but now accepts no government money, existing solely through community and corporate donations, organizers said.

Keith Oleson, committee chairman, said the program has received strong support from the paint industry this year.

“Because of their generosity, we can give homeowners a choice of colors and a quality of paint that is well beyond their financial means--all at no charge,” he said.
