Seattle has matched its best start in history, but perhaps the record book should carry an asterisk.

The Mariners’ last three victories came against the Rangers at the Ballpark in Arlington, Tex.

Chris Bosio (2-0) scattered four hits over 5 1/3 innings and Edgar Martinez hit a two-run double for Seattle, which beat the Rangers, 5-1, and ran its record against Texas to 12-1 in their last 13 games, 8-0 in their last eight in the Ballpark.

Seattle is 6-1, matching the franchise’s best record after seven games by the 1984 and 1985 teams.

“We got a four-run first and made it hold up with good pitching,” Manager Lou Pinella said. “Our starting pitching has been outstanding, and we have power and speed. I’m well pleased with the way things are going.”

The Mariners roughed up Roger Pavlik (0-1) for four runs in the first inning, Martinez’s double accounting for two of them.

New York 4, Boston 3--Bernie Williams’ sacrifice fly with the bases loaded and none out in the 13th inning gave the Yankees a victory in New York.

The Yankees, who had 16 hits, loaded the bases twice in extra innings before capitalizing when Randy Velarde started the 13th with a double, Don Mattingly was walked intentionally and Mike Stanley walked on four pitches, setting up Williams’ fly.

Milwaukee 7, Baltimore 4--The Brewers scored six runs in the ninth inning off reliever Doug Jones at Baltimore.

Trailing, 4-1, after the Orioles’ Andy Van Slyke and Chris Hoiles hit two-run homers, Milwaukee got an RBI single by Turner Ward, two runs on a single by Joe Oliver, another on a grounder by Pat Listach, another on a bases-loaded walk to Kevin Seitzer by reliever Mike Oquist and the last on Mo Vaughn’s sacrifice fly.

Cleveland 14, Detroit 7--Paul Sorrento had a three-run homer and a career-best six RBIs for the Indians’ victory at Detroit, which has been outscored, 53-26, in seven games this season.

Cleveland has scored 57 runs in winning four of six games, six of the runs coming off Tiger starter John Doherty (0-2) who lasted only into the third inning. He is 0-4 against the Indians.

Minnesota 10, Kansas City 9--Alex Cole hit an RBI double in the eighth inning at Minneapolis for the Twins, who broke a four-game winning streak.

Chuck Knoblauch led off the eighth with a triple off Rusty Meacham (0-1) and scored when Cole hit the next pitch into the right-field corner.

Toronto 8, Chicago 7--Tomas Perez singled home the winning run in his first major league at-bat as the Blue Jays won at home in 10 innings, sending Chicago to its sixth loss in seven games.
