NATIONAL LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Mets (Grand) Slam Expos on Switch

Turning around Todd Hundley turned out the wrong way for the Montreal Expos.

Hundley, the Mets’ switch-hitting catcher, hit a pinch-hit grand slam in the top of the 10th inning Thursday night to give New York a 5-1 victory over the Expos at Montreal to avoid a three-game sweep.

When Hundley came up, right-handed reliever Jeff Shaw was replaced by left-hander Brian Eversgerd because the Expos wanted Hundley to hit from his weaker side.

But Hundley, batting .375 left-handed and .167 right-handed, pulled the first pitch for the third grand slam of his career and second this season. He also had one April 26 at Colorado.

“I knew the pressure was on (Eversgerd),” he said. “I knew he’d probably throw a fastball to get ahead in the count, and I wanted to be ready for him.”

John Franco pitched 1 2/3 innings for the victory.

Montreal starter Butch Henry took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before Bobby Bonilla tripled to lead off the inning. He scored one out later on David Segui’s sacrifice fly, tying it at 1-1.

San Francisco 5, San Diego 4--Barry Bonds walked with the bases loaded in the seventh inning, forcing in the tiebreaking run, and Matt Williams followed with a two-run single in the Giants’ victory at San Diego.

Trevor Wilson worked six innings for the victory, allowing two runs--one earned--and seven hits with three walks. Rod Beck pitched the ninth for his second save.

San Diego starter Scott Sanders cruised through five innings, allowing only three hits. But the right-hander ran into trouble after allowing a leadoff single to John Patterson in the sixth. Bonds followed with a two-run homer, his first of the season.

Philadelphia 6, Cincinnati 4--Charlie Hayes drove in the go-ahead run with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to lead the Phillies at Cincinnati.

Gene Harris got the victory with one inning of relief. Jeff Slocum pitched the final two innings for his second save.

Houston 6, St. Louis 4--Consecutive doubles by Dave Magadan and pinch-hitter Tony Eusebio produced three runs in the eighth inning as the Astros rallied past the Cardinals at St. Louis.

Magadan, who entered the game in the sixth, hit a ground-rule double off Rich DeLucia (0-1) to tie the score 4-4. Eusebio followed with an opposite-field double down the right-field line off John Habyan for two more runs. Todd Jones got the victory.

Atlanta 3, Florida 3--The Braves rallied for three runs in the ninth inning against the Marlins, tying the score as a downpour began that forced the umpires to suspend the game at Miami.

It will be completed when the Braves visit Miami in September. When play resumes, Atlanta will have a runner at third base with none out in the ninth.
