Gabriel Ruelas Plans to Win, Watch Rafael

Gabriel Ruelas says he has had no problem getting psyched for his second defense of the World Boxing Council’s super-featherweight championship.

“I want to make someone pay for me not seeing my baby son for seven weeks,” Ruelas said.

That someone is Jimmy Garcia of Colombia.

Ruelas hopes to make quick work of Garcia in the second bout of the pay-per-view telecast from Caesars Palace, shower, relax a few minutes and then go back outside to watch brother Rafael against Oscar De La Hoya.

In between, Johnny Tapia will defend his World Boxing Organization junior-bantamweighttitle against Ricardo Vargas.

In the 6 p.m. opener of the TV card, unbeaten middleweights Dana Rosenblatt and Chad Parker will box another scheduled 12-rounder.

If there is a knockout or two, a scheduled six-round heavyweight bout between Joe-el Scott and Kammuel Bruce Odum might also be shown.

Promoter Bob Arum, never known to downplay a prospect, says Scott is the best youngheavyweight since Mike Tyson.

Scott, of Albany, N.Y., has won all nine of his fights by knockout, seven in the first round and six in the first minute.

Odum’s claim to fame is that he lasted 10 rounds with Axel Schulz.

Gabe Ruelas says he has trained longer at Big Bear this time than before his 12-round upset of James Leija for the title last September.

Garcia is 35-4-0, but he lost his last fight to Genaro Hernandez by decision in November at Mexico City.
