BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Browning to Start; Royals Waive Jose

Share

The Kansas City Royals waived outfielder Felix Jose to clear roster room for pitcher Tom Browning, one of three left-handers in major league history to pitch a perfect game.

The Royals will start Browning instead of Doug Linton in today’s series finale against the Angels. Browning, the former Red who pitched a perfect game against the Dodgers in 1988, was called up from triple-A Omaha after Saturday night’s game. Linton gave up 10 runs to the Cleveland Indians in his last start.

Jose had spent the last two seasons with the Royals, his third major league team. He had only four hits in 30 at-bats this season.

George Toma’s reputation as the nation’s premier groundskeeper has been enhanced even more by his latest project, the transformation of Kansas City’s Kauffman Stadium from artificial turf to natural grass this season.

Angel shortstop Gary DiSarcina called it “the best field in organized baseball,” and first baseman J.T. Snow said the infield was the best he’s ever played on.

“The dirt is so level the hops are always true,” Snow said.

Angel pitcher Brian Anderson, on the disabled list since May 6 because of a strained left biceps, is eager to return to the mound, but he has been instructed not to throw again until Monday.

“These guys won’t let me out of diapers,” Anderson said. “It’s frustrating because I feel I can at least start throwing catch, but they want me to give it two more days’ rest to make sure. I guess I better follow directions.”

Russ Springer replaced Anderson in the rotation Thursday and was hit hard in a 6-2 loss to Texas, but Manager Marcel Lachemann has pulled him in favor of right-hander Mike Bielecki, who will start at Minnesota on Tuesday.
