A man was killed and another was critically injured Wednesday morning when a pickup truck broadsided their car as they tried to cross an intersection, authorities said.

Van Tung, 42, of Riverside, died at the scene of the 7:20 a.m. accident at the intersection of 60th Street West and Avenue G, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Patrick Hunter.

Tung was a passenger in a car driven by Daou Hieu, 42, of Moreno Valley. The two were heading west on Avenue G when they stopped at a stop sign, entered the intersection and were struck by a truck driven by Cecil McDonald, 39, of Rosamond, who was heading south on 60th Street West, Hunter said.

Hunter said northbound and southbound traffic is not required to stop at the intersection. “Although he stopped before entering the intersection, he apparently didn’t yield to the truck,” Hunter said.

Hieu was taken to Antelope Valley Hospital where he was listed in critical condition, Hunter said. McDonald suffered only minor injuries and was treated by paramedics at the scene and released, Hunter said.
