Conner’s Defenders Finally Come Ashore

Share

Since Dennis Conner doesn’t seem to get much respect in The Times, here’s to him.

I never took notice of the America’s Cup until 1983, when Conner became the first American to lose it. The unabashed grief he displayed over the loss showed me two things: This was a special event, and here was a special man. Since then, my admiration has only grown, notwithstanding any recent addle-brained letters in the sports section.

That Dennis Conner and his brilliant crew managed to sail a patched-up, slow boat into the America’s Cup final should draw praise, not criticism. Unfair criticism and lack of support is why we don’t deserve to have the Cup on our shores.

Was that Dennis Conner yelling, “How about best out of 11?” as the New Zealand boat sailed by?
