Greenwood, Disiere Advance in Open Qualifier

Rich Greenwood of Encino shot 73 at Industry Hills Golf Course on Tuesday and advanced to the second tier of qualifying for the U.S. Open.

In a field of 69 players, Greenwood finished one shot behind co-medalists Hank Woodrome of Fullerton and Joe Bendetti of Phoenix.

Craig Disiere, an amateur from Burbank, shot 74 and also advanced.

The next leg of qualifying is scheduled for June 5 at Valencia Country Club.

The Open will be held June 15-18 at Shinnecock Hills, N.Y.

Cherie Zaun of Oakmont Country Club in Glendale advanced to the second round of match play in the championship flight of the 73rd Women’s Southern California Golf Assn. State Championship on Tuesday at Bakersfield Country Club.

Zaun defeated Lynne Cowan of Ridgemark Country Club, 3 and 2. Zaun will face Ann Lahey of Meadow Country Club today in the quarterfinals.

Lahey advanced by defeating Linda Chen Olsen of Porter Valley, 4 and 2.

Linda Pearson of La Canada was eliminated by Sally Tomlinson of Claremont Country Club, 2 and 1, in another match of the championship flight.

In the first flight, Sylvia Kim of Wood Ranch Country Club, Patty Mitchell of Sunset Hills and Betty Pfahler of Crystalaire each advanced.

Kim defeated Penny Welch of Castlewood, 5 and 3, Pfahler beat Marsha O’Neill of Peacock Gap, 5 and 4, and Mitchell defeated Marge Cryan of Hacienda, 1 up.

Track and Field

Victoria Herazo of Canyon Country set a United States record while winning the 20-kilometer walk in the USA Track and Field championships at Albany, N.Y., on Sunday.

Herazo, 35, timed 1 hour 35 minutes 39 seconds over the 12.43-mile distance to break the record of 1:36:28 set by Lynn Weik in 1987.

Herazo’s time was also a world record for a masters (age 35 and over) competitor, as was her time of 1:10:30 over 15 kilometers.

Baseball

Jason Adamson, a freshman outfielder from Moorpark College, has signed a contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Adamson, a 1994 graduate of Moorpark High, was selected in the 33rd round last June as a draft-and-follow pick.

He will report June 8 to the team’s Class A affiliate in Erie, Pa., a member of the New York-Penn League.

The Antelope Valley Ravens of the independent Golden State League signed Freddie Coleman, a former pitcher and outfielder at Quartz Hill High and Antelope Valley College.

The Ravens also signed versatile Scott Taylor, a graduate of Redondo Union High who plays the outfield, the infield and pitches.

Bowling

Robin Romeo of Newhall slipped from third place to eighth but was only 26 pins out of third with a score of 6,013 Tuesday night after four rounds of the $75,000 Omaha Lancers Open.

Tish Johnson of Northridge was 14th with a score of 5,887.

Leader Kim Adler of Titusville, Fla., posting a 244 average for eight games of match play, was at 6,166 and held a 63-pin lead over defending champion Marianne DiRupo of Succasunna, N.J.
