Injured Silver Goblin Is Headed for Retirement

Share

Retirement is almost a certainty for Silver Goblin, who was discovered to have a hairline fracture in his right front ankle after finishing last in Monday’s Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park.

A winner in 14 of his 20 starts, the 4-year-old Silver Ghost gelding was the heavy favorite in the Met Mile, but stopped running after being close to the pace early.

Owned and bred by A.J. Horton and trained by Kenny Smith, Silver Goblin will probably be retired to Horton’s farm in Oklahoma. The injury might have occurred when the horse was leaving the starting gate.

Before finishing second to Cigar in the Oaklawn Handicap on April 15, Silver Goblin had won eight consecutive races after finishing eighth in the 1994 Preakness.

Far back on the backstretch and seemingly still without any chance about a sixteenth of a mile from the wire, Cyrano Storme rallied to beat favored Pembroke on Thursday in the $55,000 Jack Disney at Hollywood Park. The race was run on the 60th birthday of the former sportswriter who is now associate director of publicity for Hollywood Park and Santa Anita.

Owned by Bob and Beverly Lewis and trained by Jean-Pierre Dupuis, Cyrano Storme paid $11.80 for his fourth victory in 22 starts. He was ridden by Kent Desormeaux.
