Becker Loses 2 Sets, Then Notices Rain

Rain late Saturday brought delays on the men’s side of the French Open and caused third-seeded Boris Becker’s match against Adrian Voinea of Romania to be suspended because of darkness.

Voinea won the first two sets, 6-3, 6-4, and Becker demanded that play be suspended. He began to pack his belongings and started to leave the court. Voinea protested and wanted to continue playing.

Only the tournament supervisor may suspend a match, and he was finally called as the German player continued to shout. All suspended matches will be continued today.

Defending champion Sergi Bruguera of Spain was leading Brett Steven of New Zealand, 6-2, 6-2, 3-3, when their match was suspended.

In a match that finished in rain and darkness, Andrei Chesnokov of Russia defeated 14th-seeded Todd Martin, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4.

Michael Stich of Germany, seeded No. 12, survived a scare by local favorite Arnaud Boetsch of France. Stich won, 6-2, 6-4, 5-7, 3-6, 6-3.

Sixth-seeded Michael Chang defeated Tomas Carbonell of Spain, 6-1, 6-2, 7-5, in a hard-fought match.

“I don’t think any of these matches are very comfortable,” Chang said. “Even though the first sets were 6-1, 6-2, we had a lot of long rallies and long points.”

The only seeded woman to lose Saturday was No. 14 Amy Frazier of Rochester Hills, Mich., who was beaten by Anna Smashnova of Israel, 6-1, 6-2.
