WESTSIDE NEWS : MALIBU : Wildfire Relief Funds Replenish City Coffers

Share

The city recently received $2 million in federal disaster funds to rebuild its general-fund reserves, which had dropped from $3 million to $800,000 after the November, 1993, wildfire.

The fire, started by an arsonist, killed three people, destroyed 270 homes and caused $375 million in property damage.

The denuded hillsides suffered even more damage from flooding and mudslides during the last two winters.

To cope with the city’s immediate needs after the fire, officials used most of Malibu’s reserves to clean up and make repairs.

The city received an additional $2.2 million in relief funds last month for flood damage to public property in January and March.
