VENTURA : City to Weigh Funds for Park Restrooms
In an effort to spruce up one of the city’s premier parks, the Ventura City Council tonight will consider spending nearly $250,000 to rebuild the public restrooms at Plaza Park.
Directly across from the post office in downtown Ventura, Plaza Park is one of the oldest squares in the city and is home to a number of trees and plants, said Everett Millais, the city’s community services director.
City officials first proposed new restrooms and a gazebo, but rejected all bids on the project in January because they were too costly.
Since then, city planners have scaled back the designs and removed the gazebo as part of the restoration. The city engineer estimates that the project can now be completed for about $243,000.
Engineers said the new restrooms would cost about $56,000 to design and another $187,000 to build. They are scheduled to be constructed of concrete blocks that will later be tiled and sport a copper roof. Under the renovation plans, contractors would also remove an earthen mound directly east of the restrooms. Bids are scheduled to be opened June 27.
