Tim Wakefield and Troy O’Leary weren’t even with Boston two months ago. On Sunday at Fenway Park, they were on the lengthening list of heroes for the surprising Red Sox.

Wakefield gave up no earned runs in 10 innings in his first complete game of the year and O’Leary hit a two-run game-winning homer in the 10th as Boston defeated the Seattle Mariners, 2-1.

“There’s a lot of players here that maybe people haven’t heard of,” Boston first baseman Mo Vaughn said. “But in the last six weeks they’ve shown what they can do.”

Wakefield (3-0) has needed only nine days to show his knuckleball baffles batters again.

He had pitched 22 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings before his wild throw to second on a potential double-play ball led to Seattle’s run in the 10th.

O’Leary’s homer ended an outstanding duel between Wakefield and Tim Belcher, pitchers trying to regain past success after struggling last season.

Oakland 14, Baltimore 6--Craig Paquette had seven runs batted in and hit two homers, including a grand slam, for the Athletics at Baltimore.

In addition to his grand slam, Paquette hit a two-run homer and drove in a run on a fielder’s choice. It was his first two-homer game.

Mike Bordick homered and drove in a career-best four runs, and Ruben Sierra hit his seventh homer for the A’s, whose 14 runs were a season high.

Texas 7, Minnesota 2--Mickey Tettleton homered twice and drove in six runs and ended a one-for-25 slump to back Darren Oliver’s three-hit pitching over six innings at Arlington, Tex.

Tettleton played right field for the first time since July 19, 1994, and it seemed to agree with him. His four-for-four game and six RBI matched career highs.

Tettleton drove in two runs with a first-inning double and added a run-scoring single in the third. He homered in the fifth and again in the seventh. The homers gave him nine for the season.

Cleveland 9, Toronto 8--Paul Sorrento hit a two-run home run with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning at Cleveland, completing a three-run rally that gave the Indians the victory.

The Blue Jays had a seven-run first inning, highlighted by rookie Shawn Green’s sixth home run, but couldn’t hold on.

Detroit 8, Chicago 5--Lou Whitaker’s bases-loaded double sparked a five-run ninth inning at Chicago.

The White Sox had rallied for four runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 5-3 lead, but their bullpen couldn’t hold it.

Kirk Gibson drew a leadoff walk in the ninth off Tim Fortugno. Roberto Hernandez (1-3) gave up singles to Juan Samuel, Franklin Stubbs and Chris Gomez that tied the score at 5. After a sacrifice, Scott Radinsky replaced Hernandez. Chad Curtis was walked, Whitaker followed with a two-run double, and Travis Fryman hit a sacrifice fly to make it 8-5.

Kansas City 4, Milwaukee 3--Joe Nunnally hit a pinch-hit home run leading off the seventh inning against Graeme Lloyd to provide the winning run.
