BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : Williams Has Surgery, Chimelis Steps In
Matt Williams underwent surgery for a broken right foot, and the San Francisco Giants recalled former replacement player Joel Chimelis from triple-A Phoenix. Williams was injured Saturday afternoon against Philadelphia when he fouled a pitch off his foot. Williams, batting .381 with 13 homers and 35 RBI, underwent a 20-minute outpatient procedure during which team doctors used wires to stabilize the fracture. He will be sidelined at least six weeks.

Kansas City second baseman Chico Lind, missing since he last played Wednesday, might have decided to quit baseball because of personal problems, General Manager Herk Robinson said. Lind, who left the Royals without telling anyone, was put on the disqualified list with the permission of the commissioner’s office, Robinson said.
