Marcy Crouch, Pitcher

Marina, Sr.

Crouch, a three-time first-team selection, lowered her county-best ERA to 0.11 in five playoffs victories, allowing only eight hits. She finished 22-4, and closed her prep career 68-11 with a 0.23 ERA. The Sunset League’s most valuable pitcher, only once this season did a team score more than two runs against her. She’s going to Stanford.

Heather Hollis, First Baseman

San Clemente, Sr.

Hollis established herself as a dangerous hitter early on and never let up, leading the county with 38 runs batted in. She was largely responsible for San Clemente’s emergence as a Top 10 team at midseason after going 11-14-1 a year ago. Bound for Loyola Marymount, the left-handed power hitter scored 16 runs and stole nine bases. 1995 batting record

Kelly Hauxhurst, Outfielder

Westminster, So.

Hauxhurst’s speed created all kinds of problems for opposing defenses. For her, a single was as good as a double--she recorded a county-best 35 stolen bases during the regular season, but lost the stolen base title, 37-36, in the playoffs to Savanna’s Chrissy Vega, whose team played three more postseason games than Hauxhurst’s Lions.

Amanda Freed, Pitcher

Pacifica, Fr.

Few freshmen had the impact Freed had for Pacifica, which was ranked No. 1 in the county and finished the playoffs 27-3. Her record was the best in the Southern Section since Jackie Oakley went 31-0 for Ocean View in 1985. She split time with Toni Mascarenas at third base and gave Pacifica arguably the best pitching tandem in the section.

Michelle Churnock, Infielder

Foothill, Sr.

A three-time all-county selection, Churnock may be the county’s best defensive player and its toughest out. She stole 24 bases, scored 27 runs, ultimately played for two section titles, and helped Foothill go 95-27 in four years at shortstop. She finished her career batting .410 with 93 runs and 96 steals. She’s going to Arizona.

Amanda Peterson, Outfielder

Los Alamitos, Sr.

One of the best pure outfielders in the county, Peterson’s range was largely responsible for the success of Los Alamitos, which reached the Southern Section Division I semifinals, and the 11 consecutive victories by pitcher Mandy Rockwell. She batted leadoff, stole 23 bases and scored 23 runs, and will attend Northwestern this fall.

Lisa Pitt, Pitcher

Kennedy, Sr.

Pitt suffered through Kennedy’s growing pains, a 2-6 start, but the Irish finished by winning 18 of their final 21 through the playoffs. She also was an integral part of the offense, leading the team in batting (.387), runs (15), homers (3), RBIs (16) and steals (10). A two-time first-teamer (and second-teamer as a sophomore), she’s going to Arizona. 1995 pitching record

Nikki Hart, Infielder

El Dorado, Sr.

She might have batted for a higher average had she been allowed to bat left-handed, but Hart was called upon to hit for power, and she came through for El Dorado. A second-team selection last year, she played second base, propelled the Golden Hawks into the county’s Top 10 and earned a scholarship to Oregon State. 1995 batting record

Lesley Fulton, Designated Hitter

Rosary, So.

Fulton, one of twins who transferred from Mater Dei, played third base and batted third for Rosary, which finished 21-7, won the first Golden West League title and had its winningest season since 1984. The complete offensive player, Fulton also stole 19 bases. She finished with 31 RBIs and the team lead in homers, RBIs and steals.

Kathy Ponce

Ocean View, Sr.

A two-time selection, and a second-teamer as a sophomore, Ponce wasn’t as good as she had hoped, but was still better than most despite arm trouble. She had three no-hitters, and her 205 strikeouts through the playoffs were county’s best for the second straight year. She batted a county-high .545 and will attend Arizona State. 1995 pitching record

Michelle Schneider, Infielder

Los Alamitos, Sr.

Schneider, a two-time first-team selection at shortstop, was among the elite defensive players in the county with her quick release and sure-handedness--she committed only one error during the regular season. She batted cleanup, scored 15 runs and was the undisputed leader of the Griffins. She will attend Stanford this fall.

Toni Mascarenas, Utility

Pacifica, So.

Mascarenas, a first-team pitcher last year, played a terrific third base and led the county’s top-ranked team in RBIs and runs (26). She also pitched as well as nearly anyone around, finishing the playoffs 13-3 with a 0.19 ERA and 114 strikeouts in 111 innings. She has already attracted the attention of most major colleges--and for good reason. 1995 batting record

Heather Williams, Catcher

Marina, Sr.

No one has a stronger arm behind the plate than Williams, a second-team selection last year. Her defensive skills allowed Crouch the opportunity to use her full complement of pitches. Williams commanded huge respect, and few runners challenged her: she threw out eight of 10 and picked off six. She’s going to Michigan State.

Lauren Bauer, Outfielder

Foothill, So.

Recognized by coaches this year as the county’s best outfielder, Bauer stole 17 bases and scored 17 runs for Foothill, which spent much of the year ranked No. 1 in the county and No. 2 in the state. She batted third for the Knights (25-3) and her clutch ability translated into 26 RBIs. A superb left fielder, she was a second-team selection last year. 1995 batting record
