Right-hander Ken Hill agreed to a $4,375,000, one-year contract with the St. Louis Cardinals, making him the highest-paid player on the team. Hill, 4-1 with a 4.05 ERA, had asked for $5 million going into arbitration. The team had offered $3.75 million.

The Milwaukee Brewers activated closer Mike Fetters and put outfielder Turner Ward on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right hamstring. Fetters had been on the 15-day disabled list since May 25 because of tendinitis in his right elbow. . . . The Boston Red Sox activated outfielder Mark Whiten (strained left hamstring) from the disabled list and called up pitcher Joe Hudson from double-A Trenton. The team designated outfielder Tuffy Rhodes for assignment and sent pitcher Brian Looney to triple-A Pawtucket.

Count former Commissioner Fay Vincent, who resigned under pressure in September 1992, among those who have lost interest in major league baseball.

“I think after last year when the World Series got blown away, I really have lost a lot of interest,” Vincent said in an interview for “The Great American Sports Trivia Show,” a national radio program based in St. Louis. “If you said could I name the infield of the Red Sox and the Mets, I couldn’t do it.”
