BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Allanson Goes on Disabled List

Share

The V-shaped gash on the back of Andy Allanson’s left hand hasn’t healed, so the Angels put him on the 15-day disabled list Monday. Allanson took 16 stitches on June 3 after being stepped on by Randy Velarde of the New York Yankees during a rundown.

“It just keeps popping open and they’re afraid of infection,” said Allanson, who caught two innings June 8 in Boston. “I can tolerate the pain, but it’s on the back of the knuckles where the skin gets stretched every time you flex your hand.

“It’s kind of disappointing, but I’m starting to understand what they’re thinking. I thought you had to have 100 stitches before it was a big deal, but they’ve had it in a splint for three days now and they won’t even let me break a sweat because of the chance of infection.”

Catcher Chris Turner was recalled from Vancouver to replace Allanson, and Manager Marcel Lachemann said Turner will probably platoon at catcher with Jorge Fabregas.
