BOXING : Campas Tops Eight-Fight Card at Grand Olympic

Attention local boxing enthusiasts: On Monday, the Grand Olympic Auditorium features an eight-fight card billed as the “Great Night of Mexican Boxing.”

Headlining the event is Luis Ramon (Yory Boy) Campas against Heath Todd. Campas, ranked No. 5 by the International Boxing Federation in the super-welterweight division, is currently 58-1.

Campas, from Ciudad Obregon, Mexico, suffered his only loss at the hands of IBF welterweight champ Felix Trinidad.

Todd, 27-7, has 14 knockouts and recently lost to boxing legend Roberto Duran in a nationally televised fight.

The under card includes a flyweight bout between Maikito Martinez (31-6, 25 KOs) and former World Boxing Organization champion Jose Quirino (35-16, 15 KOs). Martinez is ranked No. 3 by the World Boxing Council.

In a super-bantamweight matchup, Jose de Jesus Garcia takes on Jose Luis Noyola. Garcia (20-5, 15 KOs) fought for Mexico in the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games.

In other bouts: Undefeated junior welterweight Hector (Canonero) Quiroz (16-0, 15 KOs) faces Paulino Gonzalez (16-10, 7 KOs); Fili Castro (13-1, 12 KOs) fights an opponent to be announced; Raymond Orozco (4-4) faces Gato Ruiz (7-1, 7 KOs), and heavyweight Derrick Jefferson makes his professional debut against an opponent to be announced.

Jefferson, who won the gold medal at the 1994 Golden Gloves tournament and also at the Olympic Sports Festival, was 19-0 as an amateur heavyweight.
